Little Loop Sets Playoff Schedule
Playoff dates were set at their regional meeting of representatives of Little leaguers at Bellefonte Sunday.
Eleven league officials got together in the Region 3 meeting and a system of playoff games was determined. The region consists of Little leaguers in Clinton, Centre, Hundingdon, Mifflin and Juniata Counties.
The officials divided the teams into four districts. District 1 will consist of Renovo, Lock Haven and Jersey Shore, while Mill Hall and Blanchard comprise the second district. Bellefonte and Penns Valley were named to the third division and Big Valley, Lewistown, Huntingdon and Juniata make up number four.
Regional eliminations start the week of July 31, and all preliminary games will be played that week. In the third district, Bellefonte's Little League all-stars will play a similar team from the Penns Valley Little League at Old Fort, near Centre Hall, July 31. The following day these same teams will meet at Bellefonte.
If a third and deciding game is necessary, a coin will be tossed to determine the site.
Beginning Aug. 8, Districts 1 and 2 will send their champions against each other at Mill Hall. the titlists from the third and fourth sections will fight it out at Lewistown.
The winners of those series will be determined in one game and they, in turn, will play for the regional crown in Bellefonte about Aug. 10. The final victor will be the region's representative at the State championships at Williamsport Aug. 17.

Penns Valley Aces, Bellefonte's Best Start Playoff Series
Monday is all-star time again.
That's when the aces of Bellefonte Little League tangle with the best from Penns Valley Little League in the start of the Regional 3 series. The region's champ will be determined by a three game playoff.
The first clash of the baby baseballers will be staged at the home park of Penns Valley stars at Old Fort in Centre Hall. Game time is 6 p.m.
The following night, Tuesday, the dream teams move over to the Bellefonte diamond for the second clash. If a third game is needed the site will be determined by a toss of a coin.
The victor in the County will then travel to Lewistown to meet Region 4's kingpin in a one-game "must" battle.
A big league setting will be in view at Old Fort on Monday when the miniature Ewill Blackwells, Joe DiMaggios and Ted Williams vie for the County title. The Penns Valley league has been using a public address system for some time, and that, combined with the special size field with the two-tier wall adds up to a major league atmosphere on a smaller scale.
Both loops have selected 18-member teams for the playoffs. The Bellefonte roster includes Dick Alterio, Don Bathurst, Ronnie Brooks, Jim Dock, Dave Hampton, Garry Hillard, Tom Ishler, Mark King, Jerry Kling, Eddie McBride, Bud McCartney, George Noll, Jim Ranio, Bob Schreffler, Billy Sharp, Don Sunday, Frank Webster and Ray Young.
The Penns Valley squad is made up of Bob Adelman, Dave Braucht, Bobbie Breon, Marvin Breon, Jack Callahan, Dick Hassinger, Ray Hazel, Larry Heckman, Dick Kauffmn, Frd Markman, Dick Kauffman, Fred Markle, Roy Markle, Jimmie Martz. Don Matter, Glenn Smith Jim Smith, Adon Snyder, Dick Stine and Bob Walker.

Lone Marker Scored in 9th by Jim Smith; Play again Thursday

It may have been a Little league all-star game at Old Fort last night, but it was little league in name only.
There were thrills aplenty including two magnificent pitching performances by little Billy Sharp and Dave Braucht as the Penns Valley aces downed Bellefonte's Little League stars, 1-0, in a tense and dramatic extra-inning fight. It was the first game of Region Three's playoff series.
Jimmy Smith, Penns Valley first sacker, scored the only run of the game in the third extra frame. He led off by banking the ball off the left field wall for a double. He stole thrid when he outfoxed Sharp on the mound, and then scooted across on Dick Hassinger's grounder to third.
Bellefonte had missed a marker in the top of the ninth by a whisker. With one down, Ron Brooks reached first when he was hit by a pitched ball.
He went to second on Dave Hampton's second hit, and galloped to third on a passed ball. With two out he attempted to score, but catcher Don Matter's relay to Braucht nipped him in a close play.
Each team got five hits in the mound show, Braucht fanned 20 Bellefonters and walked only one, while Sharp whiffed 14 of the winners and passed the same number.
Both twirlers were almost invincible at the start with Braucht striking out eight in the first three innings. Penns Valley couldn't hit off Sharp until Bob Walker beat out an infield roller in the fifth.
Hampton, Bellefonte second sacker; Smith and Dick Kauffman, both of Penns Valley, had two singles apiece to lead the batting parade. Smith's last inning two-bagger was the only extra-base hit of the well-played contest.
Fielding gem of the day was pulled down by Eddie McBride, Bellefonte right fielder, in the second inning. Hassinger hit a long fly to deep right center that was labeled for extra bases, but McBride dashed to his right and backhanded the ball in his glove.
All in all, it was a great game and the capacity crowd got a favorable impression of the County's Little leaguers in action.
The teams move over to Bellefonte for the second of the three-game series Thursday at 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for tonight, but it was shifted until Thursday by mutual agreement.

Sidelights of the Little league all-star game last night between Penns Valley and Bellefonte at Old Fort:
Bellefonte was thankful that nothing happened to Don Sunday. He was the only catcher on the squad Frank Webster, also picked for the team, broke his wrist in a recent game and that left Sunday as the lone backstop.
Both teams were well-coached.
The Bellefonters were proficient at watching their own dugout for signs. Billy Sharp's curve ball had the Penns Valley batters swinging at the dust in the early innings...Braucht fanned 20 of the losers, mostly with high inside fast balls.
Bobby Walker played a bang-up game at second base for the victorious Penns Valleyites. In the fourth, he backed up first baseman Jim Smith on a bad throw and saved possible extra bases. In the same inning, he again swooped over from his second base spot to pick up a roller that got past Smith and made an unassisted putout at first. He darted back along the right field foul line for a stabbing-catch of Eddie McBride's foul fly in the eight.
Bellefonte rooters outnumbered Penns Valley partisans. They let Gib Anderson, head umpire, know what they thought of his decision at the plate in the 9th on Ronnie Brooks. Anderson, who called a good game, said that Brooks was out. It was a close play and the final judgement naturally, rested with Anderson.
Garman, Matter and Arnold Biondi did capable jobs also.
Paul Breon , coach of Centre Hall's high school baseballers and that town's entry in the Centre County Junior league, handled the play by play over the public address system. Paul, who claims he could give Rosey Rowswell some opposition, was waiting for a home run so he could say, "Open the window Aunt Minnie."
Belelfonte's first two hits were bunts by Jim Ranio and Dick Alterio. When Dick Kauffman tried the same thing in the fourth inning for Penns Valley, Sharp bounded off the mound like a jack rabbit and threw him out.
Receipts at the game were $39.24. It will be divided evenly between the two leagues.
Dave Hampton, Bellefonte keystone sacker, had all three assists in the eighth.

Bellefonte Loses Second Series Tilt; Stine Twirls 3-Hitter
Penns Valley's Little League all-stars clinched the district title last night at Bellefonte.
The Penns Valley aces whipped the best from Bellefonte's little league, 6-2, for their second straight win and thus wrapped up the series. With the district title under their collective belts, Penns Valley travels to Lewistown Tuesday for a lone battle with the champions of District 4.
Last night, the Penns Valley bats were active, splashing out 13 singles, while Dick Stine limited Bellefonte to three. In earning the pitching win, Stine whiffed 16 Bellefonters.
After a scoreless first inning, the winners broke the ice with a single run in the second on singles by Freddie Markle and Stine, and a fielder's choice.
Penns Valley exploded the next inning and shelled young Donnie Bathurst from the hill. He was replaced by lefty Billy Sharp, the hero in the losing cause Monday. Dick Kauffman led off with a single to center, and after moving to second, scored on Bobbie Walker's safety, a triple that eluded the center fielder's grasp. Jim Smith brought him across with a single and went to second on the throw-in.
Dick Hassinger's hit allowed Smith to tally. Hassinger was safe a few moments later at the plate on an error, after advancing on Ray Hazel's hit.
Bellefonte tried gamely to get back in the thick of the fight, but Stine was the master. The losers chalked up one run in the third on Whitey Noll's double and a misplay.
Bellefonte rooters, however, still had a moment of glory. In the fourth, Dick Alterio boosted one of Stine's offerings over the fence for home run. It was the only circuit clout of the two-game series.
If a batting hero is to be picked from the playoff games, it would have to be Penns Valley's Jim Smith. the snappy first baseman hit safely five times in eight trips to the plate in the two tilts.
Sparkling fielding plays were hogged by the second basemen last night. Bobby Walker made a nice save in the fifth, and Gary Hillard, who took over at second for Bellefonte in the sixth, turned two hard grounders into putouts.

Sidelights of the final playoff clash between Penns Valley and Bellefonte: 16 of 18 Bellefonte outs were strikeouts...Dick Stine enable Penns Valley to capture the district crown with that piece of moundwork.
A toss of the coin before the game was also in favor of Penns Valley...Paul Breon, president of the league, and Frank Webster, Bellefonte proxy, flipped it, and Breon called right.
That meant that the third game of the series, if Bellefonte had won last night, would have been on the field at Old Fort.
Jim Smith started where he left off Monday night when he scored the winning run...The Penns Valley first sacker singled in the first inning. He ran his streak to five consecutive hits (he got a pair the last two times at bat Monday) by singling in the third and fourth frames...Gary Hillard spliced Smith's streak in the sixth with a nice play...He ran to his right, stopped the ball, and threw Smith out by a step...Hillard saved another hit on Freddie Markle's sharp roller between first and second one out later.
The collection gathered from about 600 fans totaled $64.66...Whitey Noll's double in the third took one bounce and cleared the fence...Dick Alterio's home run was his seventh of the year...He hit six in the Bellefonte league...He was mobbed at the plate by his teammates, who poured out of the dugout to greet him...
Earl Burris, Bellefonte manager, drew some cheers when he made a catch of a foul fly in the dugout...The crowd was in view the entire way around the field, and was especially packed along the right field line...
Dave Hampton missed an extra base hit by inches in the third when the ball hit foul in right...The only player not to strike out at least once Monday, he was fooled by Stine twice last night...The second was only his seventh whiffing of the entire year...
Breon again handled the play-by-play, but Dan Grove took over in the fourth...The playoff game between the winners of Districts 1 and 3 and the titlist of Districts 3 and 4 will be played at Bellefonte next Thursday.
