Suburban, Bellefonte To Tangle Tangle Tomorrow
Homers, Pitching Decisive:
Bellefonte and Suburban earned the right to face each other in the Southern Tier semifinal game of District 10 Little League with victories last night. The two teams will square off tomorrow at Webster Field in Bellefonte at 6 p.m. Bellefonte, behind the no hit pitching of Tom Burger, beat Tri-County, 6-0, and Suburban shaded Nittany Valley, 8-5.
Burger struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter. Errors in the second and fifth innings ruined a possible perfect game. Bellefonte clinched the game with two tallies in the second, when Leroy Saylor and Dan O’Neil single and Scott Eckenroth brought them home with another single. In the third frame three errors, a fielder’s choice and Skip Shultz’ successful sacrifice with the bases loaded scored two runs. Bellefonte added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings at Port Matilda.
Suburban took the lead in the bottom of the third inning and never relinquished it at Gill Field in State College. Jim Plessinger’s two-run homer started the five-run rally. Ed Short added another round-tripper while two singles and three errors accounted for the other runs.
Nittany Valley had forged a three run lead in the top of the same inning. Gary Mann’s two-run double highlighted the inning which also saw a hit batsman, a walk, an errror, a wild pitch and a balk.
Suburban added two runs in the fourth and Nittany Valley two in the fifth inning. The game ended with a fly ball to the wall with the bases loaded for Nittany Valley.
John Sefter picked up the win. Glenn Mulberger, who needed relief help from Todd Lundy, was the loser.
