In the sixth, Putt walked pinch hitter Woody Billett with one out. When the next man struck out some the Bellefonte fans began to leave. But Scheaffer bombed Putt’s first pitch over the fence and 13 happy teammates greeted him at home plate. The honking of car horns and the clanging of garbage cans added to the confusion that existed near the Bellefonte dugout. - Clearfield Noses Out Bellefonte All-Stars. (1965, July 30). Homer Decides Thriller in 10th
Bellefonte’s hopes for a District 10 Little League championship floated down 5th Ave. when Bill Elridge of Clearfield hit a two-out homer in the 10th inning at Webster Field last night.
Elridge’s homer gave Clearfield a 3-2 victor and its ticket to the District 10 finals. Clearfield will face Dubois, which beat Emporium 9-0, last night.
Bellefonte’s Bobby Schaeffer sent the game into extra innings with a two-out, two run homer in the sixth.
Clearfield took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single, a passed ball, an infield out and an error. Elridge made it 2-0 with a blast over the left field wall in the third.
However, Dick Armstrong, a right-hander, did not allow another hit until the sixth. That’s when Bill Moore singled up the middle with two away.
Meanwhile, Armstrong’s teammates were being held scoreless by Bill Putt.
In the second, Bill Luther and Scheaffer opened the inning with singles. They were stranded, though, when Putt fanned the next two batters and forced the next batter to pop out.
“Scheaffer has been our most consistent hitter in the playoffs,” Bellefonte Manger Dick Barlett said. “I was really pleased with the way our boys fought back in the sixth. They never gave up.”
Both teams threatened in the overtime game which decided the Southern Tier title.
Mark Ebeling reached second in the seventh with two away, but Putt got Richard Condo on a fly to deep left.
Billett opened the eighth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a fly to right, a pop up and a strikeout ended the threat. With men on second and third and two out in the ninth, Clearfield failed to score.
Bellefonte loaded the bases in the 10th but couldn’t score. Relief pitcher Ron Selfridge yielded one-out singles to Luther and Shaeffer. He fanned Glen Leiter, but Barry Bitner kept Bellefonte in the game with a single to left. However, Selfridge got Ted Conklin on strikes, ending Bellefonte’s tournament hopes.
