3 Area All-Star Teams Win as Little Leaguers Open Tournament Trail
Close games were common as Little League playoffs got under way for County teams last night.
In District 10 Southern Tier action, Suburban edged Bellefonte’s All-Star team at Webster Field, 1-0, and Pleasant Gap, playing at home, defeated Nittany Valley, 7-4.
In a District 12 Area 2 game at Flemington, Penns Valley eliminated the Clinton County squad by a 4-1 count.
Suburban, which will play Mountain Top at HRB-Singer Field in State College Saturday night, scored in the third inning.
Bobby Hirsch singled to open the frame and scored from first when an attempted pickoff throw went into right field.
Bellefonte, which stranded seven runners in six innings, missed a golden opportunity in the fifth. Singles by losing pitcher Gary McClure and Roger McKinley plus a sacrifice put runners on second and third. However, Kerry Hampton fanned the next batter and retired the next man on a ground ball to shortstop.
Pleasant Gap, trailing by 3-1, scored once in the third to cut Nittany Valley’s lead to a run. However, the home side moved ahead for good in the next inning on a Denny Hile home run with the bases loaded. Jimmy Musser, the next batter, also hit one over the fence and all of a sudden it was a 7-3 game.
Tommy Fry had three hits to pace the State College team’s attack. Teammate Bill Oldsey had two as the losers outhit Pleasant Gap, 9-5. The losing pitcher was Mike Fergus.
Pleasant Gap will travel to Bald Eagle Saturday to meet the Tri-County League All-Stars.
Penns Valley, which will journey to Jersey Shore Saturday night , got started on the right foot by scoring four times in the second inning on two hits, four walks and one error. Penns Valley was held hitless the rest of the way.
A walk, a single by Gary Ream, a double by Kim Williams, two more walks, an error and another walk proved to be Flemington’s downfall.
