Bellefonte Meets Penns Valley Nine
Bellefonte’s Little League Stars and a group of aces from the Penns Valley Little League initiate the Region 5 Little League playoffs Monday at Old Fort.
Game time is 6 p.m., and the winner of the game will tangle Wednesday with the Nittany Valley Little League Stars on the field of the victor of Monday’s fray.
Penns Valley is the defending champion of both Region 5 and District 2. Other district teams are the Big Valley and Lewistown Little Leagues.
Bellefonte lost out in regional play to Penns Valley last year in a best of three series, but this year all playoff winners will be decided in one game. Penns Valley then whipped the Lewistown representative to take the district title, but fell before Mill Hall of District 1, and was eliminated from state championship consideration.
The squad that survives Wednesday’s game involving Nittany Valley or either Bellefonte or Penns Valley, will tangle with the Big Valley-Lewistown victor Saturday. That contest is booked for one of the latter’s fields. The lineups for Monday’s battle:
Bellefonte: Don Bathurst, Budd McCartney, Jerry Kling, Joe Lucas, George Taylor, Billy sharp, John Garis, Jack Witmer, Jim Kearney, Ken Anderson, Ronnie Brooks, Jim Ranio, Ray Holderman, Lefty Noll.
Penns Valley: Larry Reach, Harry Burd, Harold Benfer, Stan Shope, Don Matter, Dick Kauffman, David Waltz, Gerald Brown, Bill Mackereth, Glenn Smith, Bill Markel, Ron Tressler, Emory White, Bill Whitehill.

Bellefonte Little League All-Stars moved into the semi-finals of the District 2 playoffs last night by taking the measure of the Penns Valley Stars 6-1, at Old Fort
Southpaw Billy Sharp tossed the County Seaters to triumph and the win meant that Bellefonte will play host to the Nittany Valley League tomorrow at 6 p.m.
Sharp limited the losers to four hits. He fanned nine and walked two. Bill Whitehill pitched creditable ball for Penns Valley giving but five safeties. He was touched for only one hit until Bellefonte came up with four in the last of the fifth to chase Whitehill and bring in Dave Waltz.
Penns Valley scored first, getting its only run in the second inning. Bill Mackereth smashed a double to left, moved to third on an infield out and dashed home on a fielders choice when Jim Kearney’s throw to the plate was too late.
Bellefonte went ahead in the next frame with two tallies. Lefty Noll walked. He went to third on Jack Witmer’s single and trotted to paydirt when Whitehill balked. Two passed balls scored Witmer.
The victors apparently were out in the fifth on a double play, but John Drogan, Bellefonte manager, had called for time after a close play at third base. The ultimate catching of George Taylor was ruled void, and Bellefonte stayed at bats with two down. Then the dam broke on Whitehill.
Jim Ranio doubled, Bill Sharp clipped a single, Jim Kearney also had a single and Don Bathurst rapped out a two-bagger. That meant four runs and the ball game.
The Box Score:
Error: Mackreth. Two base hits; Macreth, Whitehill, Ranio, Bathurst. Stolen bases: Shope. Left on bases: Penns Valley 5, Bellefonte 2, Bases on balls: off Sharp 2; off Whitehill 4; off Waltz 0. Struck out by Sharp 9; by Whitehill 5; By Waltz 0. Hits off Whitehill 5 for 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings; off Waltz 0 for 0 runs in 1/3 innings; Hit by pitcher: Anderson (by Waltz). Balk: Whitehill. Losing pitcher: Whitehill. Umpires: Confer, Durst and Matter.

Nittany Valley Bows, 12-1, County Seaters Play Again Tomorrow

Bellefonte’s Little League All-Stars gained the final round of the District 2 playoffs last night by gunning to a 12-1 victory over the Nittany Valley Little League aces at Bellefonte.
The County seat midgets will play Lewistown on the latter’s field tomorrow at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will go against the District 1 representative from the Lock Haven area.
Ron Brooks and Jim Kearney teamed to pitch a 1-hit game for Bellefonte last night, and Nittany Valley’s first venture into the playoffs was thwarted.
Brooks gave up the only Nittany Valley hit, a single to center field by Ed Bohn in the first inning. However, he kept himself in hot water by walking five. He also fanned seven.
Ham Foster was the starting and losing pitcher. He was replaced in the third by John Pierce, big lefthander.
Bellefonte jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an error , a fielder’s choice and a single by Kenny Anderson.
Nittany Valley got its only marker in the same frame. Foster was awarded first base on interference by the catcher, and he ultimately scored on Bohn’s one-baser.
The winners got three runs in the second on hits by Billy Sharp, Don Bathurst and Joe Lucas. They added four more in the third on safeties off the bats of Brooks, Lucas, George Taylor and Sharp.
Pierce then held Bellefonte scoreless until the sixth when it got three final runs. The box score:

Sam Foresman of Bellefonte did a capable job of announcing at the Little League playoff game last night between Bellefonte and Nittany Valley Little League…Foresman handled the play-by-play for the grandstand audience…
Just to show how Bellefonte is Little League crazy, take a gander at these figures: The collection at the Bellefonte-Penns Valley game at Old Fort Monday was $30.62…Last night, the take was $61.46…
Frank Patrick, Penn State backfield coach, served as umpire-in-chief…Which caused one bystander to wisecrack, “The umpire’s well-built, anyhow…”
Ham Foster, first Nittany Valley pitcher wore a good luck charm attached to his belt…It didn’t help him much during his short stint on the mound…
At least the Little Leaguers are honest…In the second inning, Bellefonte Manager John Drogan questioned Patrick’s call of a foul tip by Jack Witmer, County Seat center fielder…Drogan thought the ball hit the catcher’s shin guards…Witmer, however, straightened things out by admitting to the foul ball..
Bellefonte’s Joe Lucas took advantage of a lapse by Foster and Dick Ferguson, Nittany Valley catcher, in the same inning…Ferguson left the plate unguarded to give Foster a few words of wisdom and Lucas jogged home with winners’ third run…
After a slow start, Ronnie Brooks, Bellefonte pitcher, got hot in the second inning…He gave up the only hit and only run Nittany Valley got in the first, but fanned the side in the next frame…
Brooks was interviewed for a radio tape recording…Asked what he thought of the Nittany Valley team, he replied, “I didn’t know what to think at first, but it’s going all right now” (Bellefonte led at that point, 9-1)…He admitted to the interviewer that the Boston Red Sox’ Ted Williams was his major league idol…Questioned as to whether he followed Williams all the time, Brooks made a startling statement: “I just depends. If he hits home runs I do….”
Jerry Witherite of Nittany Valley caused a chuckle in the stands when he came to the plate wearing the special batting hat used by the losers over his regular cap…It looked like a double-decker ice cream cone…
Little George Taylor, Bellefonte left fielder, batted .1000 last night…The County Seaters’ leadoff man had one hit, a single and drew four bases on balls…He also scored twice…
It’s on to Lewistown for the Bellefonte Stars…

Bellefonte Midgets Ousted From Playoffs
Lewistown Stars Top County Seaters, 3-0, On Knepp’s 2-Hitter
Bellefonte’s Little League All-Stars came to the end of the trail last night.
The Bellefonters lost out of the District 2 final to Lewistown’s midget aces, 5-1. The game was played in Lewistown.
Lewistown, by virtue of the victory over Bellefonte ,will play either the Inter-Community or Renovo Little League Stars from District 1.
Bob Knepp, a well built pitcher, held the Bellefonte team to a pair of hits. Jack Witmer got a bunt single in the third, and Jim Ranio doubled to left field in the sixth and scored the lone run for the losers. He went to third on an error by the shortstop and tallied on a passed ball to ruin Knepp’s shutout.
Lewistown scored three times in the second off Billy Sharp, and that was enough to win. Sharp, was lifted in that inning in favor of Jim Kearney, who finished out the game.
In the second, Knepp himself led off for the winners by walking. He scored a moment later on Tommy Moyle’s double. Jerry Treaster singled to send Moyle to third.
Fizzer Riden and Hugh Wagner came through with successive singles with two out for the other two runs.
Knepp fanned 12 and walked two in whipping the Bellefonte Stars. The Box score:
