Playoffs To Start Thursday
Little League:
State College's Nittany Valley American League All-Star team opens District 10 Tournament competition Thursday at Four Leaf against the Four Leaf Clover Little League team.
Five other area teams - Bellefonte, Bi-County, Pleasant Gap, Mountain Top and Nittany Valley National - drew opening round byes Thursday. All five will see action Saturday.
Penns Valley, the other area Little League entry, wil compete in District 13 playoffs this year. The four-team league will send a 14-man team to Kish Park this week to face Lewistown.
Saturday's schedule:
Osceola at Bellefonte; Nittany Valley American-Four Leaf Clover winner at Pleasant Gap; Nittany Valley National at Bi-County and Philipsburg at Mountain Top.
Single-elimination playoffs will continue Monday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 27.
The district champ will be named Saturday, July 30 when the Northern Tier winner faces the Southern Tier titlist at Emporium.
Harold Rossman and Russ Haupt will coach Bellefonte's team this year. Rossman was at the helm two years ago when Bellefonte captured the State title.
Team rosters for Penns Valley and Pleasant Gap have already appeared in The Times.
Mountain Top's two managers will be Bob Roberts and James Carlson, according to Jack Bell, the league's president. Port Matilda's Jim and Gerald Rudy will pilot the Bi-County entry.
All games start at 6 p.m. The final playoff at Emporium will begin at 4 p.m. All rained out games will be played the following day.

Mountain Top, Osceola, Nittany Nationals Win
Nittany Valley National League scored an 8-0 shutout victory over Bi-County in District 10 Little League tournament action Saturday.
In other activity, Pleasant Gap bested Nittany Valley American 6-3, Osceola Mills shut out Bellefonte, 2-0, and Mountain Top edged Philipsburg 1-0.
the Nittany Nationals picked up one run in the third frame, six big markers in the fifth and a final in the sixth to wrap up the game.
Bi-County was held hitless for the contest.
Pleasant Gap outhit the Nittany Americans.
Osceola Mills drew blood in the first and second stanza on the strength of a seven-hit attack. Bellefonte turned in two hits but wasn’t able to worm out of the goose egg column.
Mountain Top moved through three scoreless innings before pushing one across in the fourth frame to tuck away the victory. Philipsburg was out hit 5-1.
Tournament play will continue today with Pleasant Gap taking on Nittany Valley National at Nittany National and Osceola Mills meeting Mountain Top at Mountain Top. Game time is 6 p.m.
Winners of today’s contests will play again Wednesday with the victor going to compete in the finals in Emporium Saturday at 4 p.m. The finals will feature the Northern and Southern Tier champions pitted against each other.
